From Wutan Belgium Blog:
Yesterday we were asked by some people on the exact cause of death of our teacher. So I want to correct any rumors caused by misinformation:
Our teacher Mike Martello died of Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome, and that morning he woke up and not long after passed away suddenly.
He wasn’t teaching nor training at the moment and the cause of death is sudden heart failure due to a heart condition he was born with. Apart from his heart condition, he was the strongest man I have ever met. We were all sure that he would live over one hundred years old, doing Tai Chi in the park, tossing young strong men around.
He will be missed but also his spirit will remain in our hearts.
As of Sunday, 7 June 2009, Zhang Laoshi, Yu Laoshi and Rene Ming Fai Ho have come from Beijing to pay their respects to Mike. I have decided to keep the school open in honor of Mike and have appointed Zhang Laoshi as master instructor. I will oversee the administrative affairs and make sure the transition runs smooothly. Kim from Norway will be moving to Belgium to help with the classes as well. Kim, I and several senior students will lead classes when Zhang is in Beijing. He will be coming to Belgium on a regular basis from now on. I know Mike would want to continue building traditional Chinese martial arts here in Europe. We resumed classes 10 June 2009 in keeping with Mike’s belief in practice and continuity. I have discussed this transition with the students and they are all very supportive. Before he passed away, Mike had already changed the name of his school to ZHEN WU Martial Arts to honor his teacher Wang Jie Laoshi in Taiwan. We will keep the name of ZHEN WU to respect Mike’s wishes. Future website: http://www.zhenwu.be
We ‘ve met over 7 years ago. you came to Belgium, to start a new dream over here. That was the guy you were, always going for your goals. ‘no problem, all is ok ‘.. those words you spoke out so often during class.
I think you would be extremely happy to know that the school keeps on existing, thanks to Ro and Dieter, and off course the other students. you even have your own website now, how about that! And it looks great!
Turning the page is a difficult task. Necessary, but difficult.
You will always be missed, you will be talked about for many years to come.
I ‘m happy that we ‘ve met, and proud that I ‘ve trained with you.
you were one of the kindest people I know and extremely talented; in Martial Arts, but also other stuff, like your photography. An eye for detail on every level. I hope you ‘ve found a good training spot up there. Somewhere by the water.
…And that they ‘ve got pig ‘s feet up there! I miss you, you ‘re in my heart for ever, and in every motion I make in my martial art, your signature will be visible.
All is ok, all is well.

Go softly, gentle warrior. My partner, my rock, my Hommie. You taught me how to laugh and see light in darkness. Mike had Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome, which caused tachycardia. He always laughed and said, “I have a wolf in my heart,” but he was so strong, we were sure he would live til 100. Even when he was training to be a fireman in NY, he passed the tests with flying colors, could have saved an elephant from a burning building, but his EKG was off the charts erratic, and they told him his heart could give out at any time. Even so, he lived his life with no regrets. He was a genius martial artist and a good man down to the marrow.
My Hommie taught me how to laugh and see light in darkness. Mudge loves Hommie forever. You are with me always.

I had a wonderful conversation with Mikes mom today, where we shared stories and reminisced. She is strong and is doing as well as a mother who has lost her son can. She thanked me for all I had done, and I told her I had not done anything. It was Mike who was the pebble tossed into the pond creating the ripple. Marie is savvy to theDao De Qing so she understood immediately what I meant. The least any of us can do is remember Mike in this way. She wanted me to share with you all the details of Mikes memorial in New York City.
There will be memorial services in Belgium, Taiwan, and Beijing where some of Mikes ashes will be put in a very special area reserved for royalty. More info on those as I get it.
