Learning Miao Dao – Tommy

Does anyone know of any classes in the UK for learning Miao dao the way Mike taught it preferably?

I never knew Mike but I wish I had, he looked like an excellent martial artist. This is adequately reflected in the love and respect many of these tributes show from others here.

I think it would be an honour and a tribute to him to keep this sword and its style alive all over the world with more and more recognition of its history, it’s prowess and its teachers like Mike.

True Story – Jochen Wolfgramm

I was really hesitating about sharing this story because it sounds so unbelievable. But there were a lot of people witnessing this story, so now I feel quite comfortable to share it.

While our stay in Beijing this year, Dennis and me got the opportunity to visit Mike Sifus Grave in Beijing together wit ha bunch of people (Kim, Big Mike, Andy, Steve, Naomi, Huang Fei and Rosa) The Teachers were driving and leading us to that place near the emperors Tombs outside of Beijing. So after Zhang, Yu and Sun Laoshimen drove us people over 2 hours, we arrived at a beautiful landside. We had to walk and climb a hill with a lot of bushes and plants. So, like Rosa said before, some of us (ok, it was Dennis, Naomi and me) got lost and have to move back. But finally we arrived at the China part of Mike Sifus Grave.

Sweating and with nearly sore muscles – of course Mike let us train even in his afterlife.  So we stood around a pile of rocks and Rosa started talking to Mike Sifu. We offered some Cookies and spilled some soda. And then, at that moment when everybody was around and gazing at that pile of rocks, a little black Mantis appeared and gazed back at us! We couldn’t believe it first, so we took some photos and said hello to little Mantis – Mike.

One year ago, Sifu Mike Martello woke up and died of a congential heart defect. Teacher Mike had Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome. On the morning of June 2nd, 2009, Mike Martello passed away suddenly in Belgium. He was 42, despite his young age, he had achieved the level of mastership of a Chinese master in his 60’s. As a martial arts genius, he was loved all over the world and travelled a lot to teach and to meet students and friends. Yet it was not only his profound knowledge that impressed the people who were fortunate enough to meet him. He was a generous man, with a heart for the people and the art. Both played a very important role in his life. From the start, Kung Fu was for him a way of selfdevelopment. Through giving and sharing from the heart, he connected himself with others and pointed us towards the meaning of passion – the beauty of life.

During training, he would make tea for us and after the intens lessons, he would cook or we would go out for dinner. Being a just man with a big heart, he talked a lot about the moral fabric of the individual. He believed firmly that with great power comes great responsibility. For the men he was tough, like a father who wanted his sons to be able to look after themselves and yet with a love only
fathers possess. For the women and the children he was a gentleman amongst gentlemen, his eyes changed from strict to protecting, caring, respecting and loving.

Just like Picasso, he was a large tree with a strong root bearing all kinds of different fruit. The strong root stands for his great personality as an individual, one who refused to follow the herd. Rather, it was in his blood to lead. The different types of fruit were a result of his hard work to fulfill his passion. And yet, everyone was welcomed to benefit from it.

His person, his work will never be forgotten. As in many places all over the world, people are remembering him and honouring him through the practise of Kung Fu, taking care of eachother, being all they can be.

RIP, my teacher and friend.

[?? 06:10:21] mike martello: like just basic functional coordination and body alignment
[?? 06:10:37] mike martello: yes yes i know
[?? 06:10:39] mike martello: I do train when i teach
[?? 06:10:49] mike martello: yes yes let me explain
[?? 06:10:51] mike martello: hehee
[?? 06:11:05] mike martello: of course that is so true and why I have grown

[?? 06:13:35] mike martello: i call it ming jing ming jing, gui li gui li… obvaice power and encouragement
[?? 06:14:10] huaihsiang: True..the difference lies in their lacking of true understanding of the nature of the art and quest. ..
[?? 06:14:16] mike martello: what I train is too subtle and not seen not he outside of the body and I realise for students this is not good, they need see it and feel it…
[?? 06:14:18] mike martello: yes yes
[?? 06:14:41] mike martello: so my needs are not their yet i can train

[?? 06:15:15] mike martello: we have went thru so much we forget

[?? 06:15:40] mike martello: we see the freedom already
[?? 06:15:43] mike martello: they cannot
[?? 06:15:53] mike martello: we feel the freedom
[?? 06:15:56] mike martello: they cannot
[?? 06:16:04] mike martello: like you said earlier
[?? 06:16:16] mike martello: the difference lies in their lacking of true understanding of the nature of the art and quest. ..
[?? 06:16:28] mike martello: it has helped me to be a better teacher now
[?? 06:16:39] mike martello: and students don’t get as frustrated
[?? 06:18:10] huaihsiang: That is why the true teachings are tailor made, individualized per each individual’s peculiarities,   standardized curriculum is impossible…
[?? 06:18:39] mike martello: ah very good point
[?? 06:18:48] mike martello: this is the hardship I find now
[?? 06:19:05] mike martello: students want a curriculum
[?? 06:19:10] mike martello: and I offer none
[?? 06:19:37] mike martello: if I want to survive i need to have one in place as a placebo
[?? 06:20:15] huaihsiang: Actually, I have been pondering over Sifu Tony Puyot’s  proposition…..perhaps I should position myself clear and square at  the beginning…true teaching is only available for those who are serious about their quest on the path of kung fu…for those who are not serious enough, the set program is good enough…
[?? 06:21:01] mike martello: this I have learned over the years of mistakes and teaching or trying to teach for real
[?? 06:21:11] mike martello: when its real people seem to turn the other way
[?? 06:21:19] mike martello: and only a very few are left
[?? 06:21:20] huaihsiang: You can franchise the standard system or programs easily, and take your time to observe and qualify the students in time,
[?? 06:21:33] mike martello: the very few do not pay bills thou
[?? 06:21:40] mike martello: but that is not my nature
[?? 06:21:51] mike martello: my conflict
[?? 06:22:13] mike martello: i have a CPA student tells me all the time to change my system like franchise
[?? 06:22:41] mike martello: i seem to understand the good of it for the clubs growth, business… but I myself am torn
[?? 06:23:21] huaihsiang: Yes, this happens, but I think it is time to set up the rules of the game, similar to the Japanese game,  not to make money though, just to ensure that there is enough resource for the propagation and sustainment of the art in an era of annihilation…
[?? 06:23:30] mike martello: i understand what true teaching is and almost cannot stand in front of a group and teach anything less, i will feel bad and question myself why do I myself train…
[?? 06:24:13] mike martello: why my club is still small
[?? 06:24:21] huaihsiang: That is a good question to ask to oneself though…..why do I train, and what for?
[?? 06:24:46] mike martello: I love teaching and helping people….
[?? 06:25:02] mike martello: I get so much back from it that money seems like nothing
[?? 06:25:33] mike martello: just part o the game of living
[?? 06:27:14] huaihsiang: Could it be that the teaching is imposive, and yet the helping is not needed?  If this is the case, something is wrong, if this is not the case, then the case shall rest…….Money is always a difficult topic, but it is necessary to address on this topic….as long as livelihood is concerned….
[?? 06:28:16] mike martello: thats possible… and yes money is needed to be addressed…
[?? 06:28:22] mike martello: imposive
[?? 06:28:27] mike martello: maybe maybe not
[?? 06:28:35] mike martello: some really need help
[?? 06:28:39] mike martello: some do not
[?? 06:29:01] mike martello: if I was not helped today maybe I would be something I would not
[?? 06:29:21] mike martello: people have helped me, its only kind to help back
[?? 06:29:31] mike martello: Yuan
[?? 06:29:36] mike martello: Yuan feng
[?? 06:30:25] huaihsiang: Mn…true sharing is not about the art of give and take…
[?? 06:30:49] mike martello: true, that is true….
[?? 06:33:03] huaihsiang: All encounters in life in between individuals are beginning of the growing of relationship in between the two, as to whether the relationship is good or bad, that is up to their hands….the encounter as of the beginning is Yuan, as to the quality of relationship is what is called “Feng”.   What is happening in between the teacher and the student is beyond yuen feng!
[?? 06:35:18] mike martello: that is beautiful….
[?? 06:35:46] mike martello: thank you so much i will ponder these things
[?? 06:36:30] huaihsiang: thank you for calling…I will keep you updated as to my father’s condition.
[?? 06:37:07] mike martello: have  a nice day Howard, I will think of you today, send you some good warmth….
[?? 06:37:11] mike martello: ciao
[?? 06:37:30] huaihsiang: (F)   say hi to Rosa for us.
[?? 06:37:43] mike martello: will do… and also to your family
[?? 06:37:49] mike martello: bye

[?? 06:37:54] huaihsiang: bye

Stephen Manning – Tribute

My introduction to Mike was through seminars in New mexico, Seattle, and Texas.  I was floored when I saw this small guy move.  Everything was connected, powerful, and the intent was there.  When he applied an Chin-Na,  it was soft, controlled from the Dan-tien, and  with such ease.  I knew I came upon somebody really special.  Mike was gracious to come train us in Texas this March.  Mike stayed with my wife and I during the training.  He cooked a great Italian meal for my wife when she was sad because of losing a pet.  Mike had a calmness around animals and they loved him.  Photography!! Don’t get me going on this.  Ok.  He took pictures of everything, pets, cats, cactus, you name it.  During a lightning storm he was running around outside like a little kid.  I finally got him in with some fresh tea.

He got me to not think so western, and believe that anything was possible.  He proved it to me by various exercises of standing training and sitting breathing.  We all learned so much.

Mike was so proud talking about family and friends.  It’s just that look he gave you.  so proud of New York.  Mike talked about his teacher in Taiwan and how he was guided Mike to his martial goals.  I hope everybody keeps training in the lessons he taught.  Probably the most dedicated person I ever met.  My Condolences to his family and  friends.

Most Respectfully,

Steve Manning

CONTINUING SIFU MIKE MARTELLO’S LEGACY

As of Sunday, 7 June 2009, Zhang Laoshi, Yu Laoshi and Rene Ming Fai Ho have come from Beijing to pay their respects to Mike. I have decided to keep the school open in honor of Mike and have appointed Zhang Laoshi as master instructor.  I will oversee the administrative affairs and make sure the transition runs smooothly.  Kim from Norway will be moving to Belgium to help with the classes as well. Kim, I and several senior students will lead classes when Zhang is in Beijing.  He will be coming to Belgium on a regular basis from now on.  I know Mike would want to continue building traditional Chinese martial arts here in Europe.  We resumed classes 10 June 2009 in keeping with Mike’s belief in practice and continuity. I have discussed this transition with the students and they are all very supportive.  Before he passed away, Mike had already changed the name of his school to ZHEN WU Martial Arts to honor his teacher Wang Jie Laoshi in Taiwan.  We will keep the name of ZHEN WU to respect Mike’s wishes.  Future website: http://www.zhenwu.be

Mike Martello Memorial Info

I had a wonderful conversation with Mikes mom today, where we shared stories and reminisced. She is strong and is doing as well as a mother who has lost her son can. She thanked me for all I had done, and I told her I had not done anything. It was Mike who was the pebble tossed into the pond creating the ripple. Marie is savvy to theDao De Qing so she understood immediately what I meant. The least any of us can do is remember Mike in this way. She wanted me to share with you all the details of Mikes memorial in New York City.

There will be memorial services in Belgium, Taiwan, and Beijing where some of Mikes ashes will be put in a very special area reserved for royalty. More info on those as I get it.

On June 21st 2009 at 3pm their will be a memorial service for Mike Martello at the following location:
Holy Trinity Parish
14-51 143rd St.

My beloved Teacher Mike Martello

I was in Mantis for over 15 years when Robert Hui posted some of Mikes stuff in the MQ Forum. I was interested. Then after I invited Jake to my school to introduce his Mantis stuff here in Germany, Mike suddenly appeared with a bunch of his students.
We spoke a lot together and it felt like he was able to read my mind.
After that I had to visit him in his place in Antwerp. I trained some days with him and it blew me away. He was the first one who could really do and show all the legendary stuff said to be “real Kung Fu”. Noone could show me before.
I became his student and over the time he became more and more a friend and Mentor. He helped me through the silly politics of my past Mantis family, he showed me the connection between Wai Jia and Nei Jia, he shared his life with me and so did I.

Mike and me had a lot of plans together, like creating the Zhen Wu Organisation in Europe and China, getting our Clubs BIG.
I don´t know how I should do this all without him, but I do know: I must what I can do to let his legacy not vanishing.

Please visit also our blog, where my students say farewell to Mike. We all miss him like hell.
Although it is in german, you can translate it via Google easily and quite acceptable (if you can read my german – english, you can read the translation 😉 ). http://bailung.blogspot.com/

I also uploaded a Compilation of Footage from Mikes Seminars here in Osnabrueck, Germany. 5 High-Resolution Clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXv4Oa8CyXY
Have fun.

Mike, it was way too soon that you left this world and leave so many behind. I still can´t see any reason in this and it will take a long time untill I will do so.
Farewell my Friend and Teacher, I love you and I miss you.

Mikes Youtube Legacy

Here is a link to Mike’s Youtube account where you can find hours and hours of footage.  I know with his seminars in New Mexico, and here in Seattle, WA. he basically took all the footage I gave him and edited it down to the meat and potatoes so to speak.  Those of you around the world are lucky in that Mike believed in sharing every

Mike tossing Jason "The Cajun" on his arse while training in New Mexico

thing.  He used to say: “Jake, why worry about anyone stealing something from video?  They were not their, they did not feel what was happening.  I want the world to see that the Chinese martial arts are still going strong, because honestly I am worried about the quality of the teachings being passed down.”

http://www.youtube.com/user/mikemartello Enjoy guys.  Lots, and lots of good stuff on those videos.  I do not know how things are handled on Youtube once someone passes, so you may want to burn them to hard drives just in case.

Peace,

Jake

Mike Martello dot com & Three Harmonies

Mike and his infamous grin

Mike and his infamous grin

Big props to Keith Weiner and Kin (sorry broski, cannot remember your last name at the moment) for creating Mike Martello.com!  They spent sleepless hours after their already hectic work days trying to get this site up and going, and for that we thank them as well as our brothers and sisters at Wutan Canada.

My name is Jake Burroughs, for those who do not know me I am a friend and student of Mike Martello’s living in Seattle, WA. Keith was actually my first Mantis and Baji instructor, so when he asked me to be involved with this project, how could I refuse!?  We are all family and one of the bittersweet side effects of a situation like this is that we re-connect with those we have fallen out of touch with over the years.

So it gives me great pleasure in announcing the collaboration of Mike Martello.com and the Three Harmonies blog “The Ground Never Misses” in an effort to offer a platform where people can come share, learn, get information, and offer their thoughts regarding the passing of our dear friend and teacher Mike Martello.

Please feel free to get as involved, or not, as you wish here.  Share pictures, stories, video, and view what others have to say and offer.  We will also be posting news items as we receive them regarding memorial services in three different continents (even in death Mike is setting records!!).  As well as other information for students and friends alike.

Obviously any and all seminars and workshops that were scheduled with Mike are now cancelled.  Please contact the specific host of said seminar for more information, as we here do not have specific info on re-imbursements, etc.

If anyone needs anything, or has any suggestions please let us know.  We are all rookies at this kind of thing, but together we can make it work smoothly.

Peace,

Jake B.
