ZeroKid Tribute

One year ago, Sifu Mike Martello woke up and died of a congential heart defect. Teacher Mike had Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome. On the morning of June 2nd, 2009, Mike Martello passed away suddenly in Belgium. He was 42, despite his young age, he had achieved the level of mastership of a Chinese master in his 60’s. As a martial arts genius, he was loved all over the world and travelled a lot to teach and to meet students and friends. Yet it was not only his profound knowledge that impressed the people who were fortunate enough to meet him. He was a generous man, with a heart for the people and the art. Both played a very important role in his life. From the start, Kung Fu was for him a way of selfdevelopment. Through giving and sharing from the heart, he connected himself with others and pointed us towards the meaning of passion – the beauty of life.

During training, he would make tea for us and after the intens lessons, he would cook or we would go out for dinner. Being a just man with a big heart, he talked a lot about the moral fabric of the individual. He believed firmly that with great power comes great responsibility. For the men he was tough, like a father who wanted his sons to be able to look after themselves and yet with a love only
fathers possess. For the women and the children he was a gentleman amongst gentlemen, his eyes changed from strict to protecting, caring, respecting and loving.

Just like Picasso, he was a large tree with a strong root bearing all kinds of different fruit. The strong root stands for his great personality as an individual, one who refused to follow the herd. Rather, it was in his blood to lead. The different types of fruit were a result of his hard work to fulfill his passion. And yet, everyone was welcomed to benefit from it.

His person, his work will never be forgotten. As in many places all over the world, people are remembering him and honouring him through the practise of Kung Fu, taking care of eachother, being all they can be.

RIP, my teacher and friend.

“Be all you can be, but don’t be me” – Sifu Mike
Martello.

THANK YOU – MICHAEL’S MOTHER

The family of Michael Martello is grateful for the cards of sympathy and all the tributes and testimonials to him.
He was in physique a slim and small man, but in his heart he was a giant.
I cherish as you all do the times we had together.
Mike had a strong relationship with his family, friends, students and Masters.
He was a true Sifu, yes he was a teacher and father figure to many.  He was disciplined and commanded respect.  As Director of Wutan VZW Martial Arts Center in Belgium, he touched the lives and hearts of many.
He has left us in sadness but we are comforted by his family and friends.
He will be remembered for his dedication.”
Fondly,
Mike’s Mom Marie Martello

IMG_0916 Master Zheng, Mike, Jeff, Doug & Rene 8-13-07smTo all,

I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Michael. I am very saddened and shocked to hear of his sudden death. To my luck and fortune I found Michel on YouTube in my search for links to my late teacher Huang Tzengyu and also other true masters that I could meet and learn from.

I only new him a short time just first meeting him in Beijing. I was amazed by him and the masters there. Even though I only new him for such a short time, I must truly thank him for he has been a profound influence in my life. I will never forget him.

I have some pictures of Michel and some videos I made while in Beijing for the Summer Camp and at a seminar in Seattle. I will send a few of them now and others if you would like.

Sincerely,
Douglas Wolf

Bizarre Montreal Weekend

From Pat Lawlor:

The Wild weekend in Toronto is OK to post. I was a good boy, however some others were a little less good.

Another little anecdote:
Once Rosa got Mike some plane tickets to Montreal as a gift but they had nowhere to stay. Sifu called Victoria and I and asked if we could help out. I called about a thousand hotels, but you see, it was Grand Prix weekend and everything from Plattsburg NY to Trois Rivieres was booked solid. Some receptionists even laughed at me. That’s why there was nowhere to stay.
Victoria stepped up and got her father to put them up and I met them at the airport. Mike followed me in a rental to Victoria’s father’s house but there was no one home. After pounding on the door and windows, we left. Mike and Rosa went downtown and I went home to see if I could do anything else. My wife and I agreed that they could stay at our house so we cleaned up (three teenagers worth of mess) and I called Victoria. Apparently her father is hard of hearing and refuses to wear his hearing aid. He was, in fact, home but couldn’t hear us knocking.
Anyway, later in the evening I got a call from Mike. He was somewhere in Montreal and wanted to know how to get back to my place.  It’s very difficult understanding french street signs pronounced with a New Yawk accent. I eventually had to get him to spell the street name.
One of my daughters and I jumped in the car and went to find them somewhere off St Denis. There were throngs of people. I had to double park and run over to them to get them get them to watch for my car and follow mw home. Mike was never frantic and totally calm. Most people I know would have paniced. He and Rosa stayed at my house for a couple of days and my daughter guided them back over the Champlain bridge towards the airport for their flight home on Monday.

If Rosa remembers this, it would be put down as a very bizarre weekend for them.

My wife remembers that weekend and she also was saddened by Mike’s passing.

Tony Marden – Tribute

Me and Mike went to 8 years of grammar school together in Holy Trinity. Me and Mike were always the 2 shortest ones in the class, and sure enough the teachers all loved the size order alignment. So I am the one usually next to mike in the class photos, holding the sign with him in front. Me and mike were buddies. he had a great sense of humor. I remember very clearly, I was always envious of Mike’s lunch. I usually had BP&J which i hated and Mike would have fried salami or fried bolgna on toast  sandwiches. We always thought what a great Mom he must have had to go through that effort every day. He would usually give up half to anyone who stared long enough with a drooling mouth. You will be missed pal. Rest in Peace. your old friend, Tony M.

My last on line chat with Mike….
The followings were my last on line chat through skype with Mike on April 7, 2009.  Mike tried to call me to inquire about my father’s well being.  My father was hospitalized and underwent a tumor removal surgery.  When I read the conversation again, I can feel the warmth and brotherhood from Mike in a vivid personality.   In memory of Mike, I would like to share this conversation with all who know Mike in person.  Part of the conversation is abridged/removed  because of privacy.
In love and peace.

*****************************
[?? 06:01:44] mike martello: strange thing is Howard, I have been teaching for a long time now, i have a good handle on the qinna your dad taught me and my internal is growing… but but… I have learned….
[?? 06:02:14] mike martello: it is not for everyone, I teach basics for it bit no one yet has even been able to grasp the basic ideas
[?? 06:02:42] mike martello: I have come to believe it is way to high level for people to grasp because of the mind is out of snyc and body
[?? 06:03:30] huaihsiang: Mn…in a way, yes, it is difficult for the majority of people, yet itself is so simple….
[?? 06:03:42] huaihsiang: I call it degree of freedom….in between one’s body-mind…
[?? 06:03:44] mike martello: the flow of energies that allows one to grasp the others mind body is not just grabbing and twisting as people think.. it is beyond that… and that needs special people to understand
[?? 06:04:24] mike martello: yes simplicity in fact it is, but one must have reached the inner simplicity to really appreciate how subtle and simple it flows
[?? 06:04:44] huaihsiang: one’s body mind, one has to break free from the shackle first, then each and every move they make will be nothing but the manifestation of freedom, both internal and external…
[?? 06:04:46] mike martello: and yet i feel like a beginner still
[?? 06:05:05] mike martello: yes i get that, and that is what i see lacking in people
[?? 06:05:26] mike martello: army qinna for them is quite better
[?? 06:05:33] huaihsiang: They do not lack it, just that they are not aware of it.
[?? 06:05:36] mike martello: muscles and leverages as you say
[?? 06:05:44] mike martello: better put…
[?? 06:06:06] mike martello: true , your dad told me, I will not teach you, I will pull it out of you
[?? 06:06:17] mike martello: so you are correct
[?? 06:06:24] mike martello: lack is a bad word
[?? 06:07:35] huaihsiang: You said just now that you have not been teaching…what have you been up to then.
[?? 06:08:02] mike martello: No no I have been teaching
[?? 06:08:24] huaihsiang: I see…
[?? 06:08:47] mike martello: but i realize what I perceive to be taught is not what the student needs
[?? 06:09:03] huaihsiang: What do they need then?
[?? 06:09:07] mike martello: I have been for too long pushing on students what I want to train
[?? 06:09:18] mike martello: or what i need to train
[?? 06:09:27] mike martello:  but my needs are not there
[?? 06:09:32] mike martello: theirs
[?? 06:10:02] mike martello: so yes i have stepped back from my personal needs during classes and focus on the needs of students
[?? 06:10:16] huaihsiang: You do not need further training…..you train when you teach….aside from that, unlearn what you had learned is more important for you…..
[?? 06:10:21] mike martello: like just basic functional coordination and body alignment
[?? 06:10:37] mike martello: yes yes i know
[?? 06:10:39] mike martello: I do train when i teach
[?? 06:10:49] mike martello: yes yes let me explain
[?? 06:10:51] mike martello: hehee
[?? 06:11:05] mike martello: of course that is so true and why I have grown
[?? 06:11:16] mike martello: but I realize students are not me
[?? 06:12:36] mike martello: they need themselves to go thru what their body and minds need for foundation>>> i cannot put my foundation on them but show them what they are missing and need build… some need strength pure and simple, some need confidences, some need coordination, some need to just socialize
[?? 06:13:35] mike martello: i call it ming jing ming jing, gui li gui li… obvaice power and encouragement
[?? 06:14:10] huaihsiang: True..the difference lies in their lacking of true understanding of the nature of the art and quest. ..
[?? 06:14:16] mike martello: what I train is too subtle and not seen not he outside of the body and I realise for students this is not good, they need see it and feel it…
[?? 06:14:18] mike martello: yes yes
[?? 06:14:41] mike martello: so my needs are not their yet i can train
[?? 06:15:01] mike martello: I found a balance and it seems to get results better than before
[?? 06:15:15] mike martello: we have went thru so much we forget
[?? 06:15:29] mike martello: we forget all the training we did to get to this state
[?? 06:15:40] mike martello: we see the freedom already
[?? 06:15:43] mike martello: they cannot
[?? 06:15:53] mike martello: we feel the freedom
[?? 06:15:56] mike martello: they cannot
[?? 06:16:04] mike martello: like you said earlier
[?? 06:16:16] mike martello: the difference lies in their lacking of true understanding of the nature of the art and quest. ..
[?? 06:16:28] mike martello: it has helped me to be a better teacher now
[?? 06:16:39] mike martello: and students don’t get as frustrated
[?? 06:18:10] huaihsiang: That is why the true teachings are tailor made, individualized per each individual’s peculiarities,   standardized curriculum is impossible…
[?? 06:18:39] mike martello: ah very good point
[?? 06:18:48] mike martello: this is the hardship I find now
[?? 06:19:05] mike martello: students want a curriculum
[?? 06:19:10] mike martello: and I offer none
[?? 06:19:37] mike martello: if I want to survive i need to have one in place as a placebo
[?? 06:20:15] huaihsiang: Actually, I have been pondering over Sifu Tony Puyot’s  proposition…..perhaps I should position myself clear and square at  the beginning…true teaching is only available for those who are serious about their quest on the path of kung fu…for those who are not serious enough, the set program is good enough…
[?? 06:21:01] mike martello: this I have learned over the years of mistakes and teaching or trying to teach for real
[?? 06:21:11] mike martello: when its real people seem to turn the other way
[?? 06:21:19] mike martello: and only a very few are left
[?? 06:21:20] huaihsiang: You can franchise the standard system or programs easily, and take your time to observe and qualify the students in time,
[?? 06:21:33] mike martello: the very few do not pay bills thou
[?? 06:21:40] mike martello: but that is not my nature
[?? 06:21:51] mike martello: my conflict
[?? 06:22:13] mike martello: i have a CPA student tells me all the time to change my system like franchise
[?? 06:22:41] mike martello: i seem to understand the good of it for the clubs growth, business… but I myself am torn
[?? 06:23:21] huaihsiang: Yes, this happens, but I think it is time to set up the rules of the game, similar to the Japanese game,  not to make money though, just to ensure that there is enough resource for the propagation and sustainment of the art in an era of annihilation…
[?? 06:23:30] mike martello: i understand what true teaching is and almost cannot stand in front of a group and teach anything less, i will feel bad and question myself why do I myself train…
[?? 06:24:13] mike martello: why my club is still small
[?? 06:24:21] huaihsiang: That is a good question to ask to oneself though…..why do I train, and what for?
[?? 06:24:46] mike martello: I love teaching and helping people….
[?? 06:25:02] mike martello: I get so much back from it that money seems like nothing
[?? 06:25:33] mike martello: just part o the game of living
[?? 06:27:14] huaihsiang: Could it be that the teaching is imposive, and yet the helping is not needed?  If this is the case, something is wrong, if this is not the case, then the case shall rest…….Money is always a difficult topic, but it is necessary to address on this topic….as long as livelihood is concerned….
[?? 06:28:16] mike martello: thats possible… and yes money is needed to be addressed…
[?? 06:28:22] mike martello: imposive
[?? 06:28:27] mike martello: maybe maybe not
[?? 06:28:35] mike martello: some really need help
[?? 06:28:39] mike martello: some do not
[?? 06:29:01] mike martello: if I was not helped today maybe I would be something I would not
[?? 06:29:21] mike martello: people have helped me, its only kind to help back
[?? 06:29:31] mike martello: Yuan
[?? 06:29:36] mike martello: Yuan feng
[?? 06:30:25] huaihsiang: Mn…true sharing is not about the art of give and take…
[?? 06:30:49] mike martello: true, that is true….
[?? 06:33:03] huaihsiang: All encounters in life in between individuals are beginning of the growing of relationship in between the two, as to whether the relationship is good or bad, that is up to their hands….the encounter as of the beginning is Yuan, as to the quality of relationship is what is called “Feng”.   What is happening in between the teacher and the student is beyond yuen feng!
[?? 06:35:18] mike martello: that is beautiful….
[?? 06:35:46] mike martello: thank you so much i will ponder these things
[?? 06:36:30] huaihsiang: thank you for calling…I will keep you updated as to my father’s condition.
[?? 06:37:07] mike martello: have  a nice day Howard, I will think of you today, send you some good warmth….
[?? 06:37:11] mike martello: ciao
[?? 06:37:30] huaihsiang: (F)   say hi to Rosa for us.
[?? 06:37:43] mike martello: will do… and also to your family
[?? 06:37:49] mike martello: bye

[?? 06:37:54] huaihsiang: bye

Howard Huai Hsiang Wang Tribute

IMG_0915Michael does not speak Chinese, nor does my father speak English, yet what was it that made them become a father and a son to each other? Mike appeared out of nowhere, and disappeared all of a sudden, leaving us nothing but fond memories with tears in kinship. Michael was blessed by living his dreams, a kung fu student up to the spirit and a family member closer than blood! May thee rest in peace, my dearest bother! Thy legend shall remain the aspiration to all in the lineage!

Sister Rose Tribute

From Sister Rose:

Thank you all for your beautiful comments about my brother Michael Anthony Martello.

I never got a chance to see Mike at work in his school in Belgium but always was amazed by his total dedication, the expert level of his craft, and his commitment to learning and teaching and knowledge.

He LIVED his life HAPPY.

We miss him but we know that his spirit will live on in all that he did in his work and all whom he touched in his life.

He was one of THE most beautiful people that I have ever met and I had the privilege of being his ” big ’sis “.

I will NEVER forget my brother Mike… He was a shining light in this world.

My family will never be the same without him.

Kid From The Neighbourhood

From Roman Bihansky, a kid from the neighbourhood:

I met Mike Martello when I was about 9 years old , back in Woodhaven Queens , New York.
Every kid in the neighborhood knew Mike although he may not have known , we were just common neighborhood punks.
He must have been about 14 or 15 years old .
He chased the younger kids and tormented us , but we chased him back . Sometimes during the summer there were so many kids hanging out at night when we were playing kick the can or ring – a – lario that kids from all over the neighborhood joined in , climbing roof tops , jumping fences and pool hoping that you made friends with people from all over , and it was great .

The next time I saw Mike was about 25 years later , I walked into a seminar that he was giving on Chin Na here NYC last summer and I just did not recognize the name . I was the 1st one there that day and was hanging around waiting , went to look around and when I came back I saw this little kid facing the other direction and was like , who’s that ?
When he turned around I felt this chill in my spine and recognized that Italian face that was so unforgetable when we were kids , It’s ( psycho Mike ) I did not say it though .
I dont think he remembered me personally but we talked and and shared childhood memories of the old hood .

What an incredible martial artist he became ! What incredile nice person he grew into be. I will miss him and the chance to reconnect after such a long time was great .
